をGET。

Nagano Travel Guide

Here is a Nagano Travel Guide written by Suzaka Higashi High School students.

Suzaka Higashi High School is very close to Guest House Kura. As you know, all Japanese high school students study English at their high school in Japan, but almost all English classes are for studying for university entrance exams, not for learning practical English conversations.
However, at this high school, there is a class called "Oral Communication" that was devised with the purpose to teach students practical use English. At Guest House Kura, we host many guests that come from abroad. So on the one hand, we have students who are studying English, and on the other, we have a guest house with many overseas visitors. We put much thought into it together and started a project, the Nagano Travel Guide! The native high school students would use their local knowledge of the area to introduce their recommendations for sightseeing spots in English. Please take a look!
We wish to express our thanks for the support of this project to the three teachers we collaborated with, American-born Mandy-sensei and two other Higashi High School English teachers, Chikage-sensei and Tomisato-sensei.

Sakura in Suzaka, Nagano No.1

Sakura in Suzaka, Nagano will be in full bloom next week!(around 12th Apr.2013)
In Suzaka, there are many beautiful spots where you can enjoy Sakura!!
We will introduce some of them.

Garyuu Park’s Night Sakura

Garyuu Park in Suzaka City, Nagano, was built in 1932 under the
supervision of Dr. Honda Seiroku’s Suzaka City’s Park Design Plan.

In the center of the park “someiyoshino” and various other types of
cherry trees surround the lake, and when spring comes they all
blossom together.

When night falls, the blossoms are lit up, and they can be enjoyed
as well with the lighting that makes seem to become even more
mystical and artistic.

Jyabara

Suzaka is famous for KURA building.
Kura means traditional Japanese storehouses.
It was constructed from earth and timber.
Almost all of KURAs in Suzaka used to be for storage of silk.
Suzaka prospered as a silk cultivation town about 100-150 years ago.

One of the main characteristics of KURA in Suzaka is Jyabara.
KURAs in Suzaka, they have three types of Jyabara, and it's rare.

Jyabara ceiling moldings are located in the area where the roof attaches to the wall.
They were created to hide the ceiling framework style called taruki,
and with their different ornamental styles they change the impression of the warehouse.

1. 3 step jyabara moldings

From the roof to the wall, the three steps of these moldings
give an impression of substance to the building.

2. Kuri jyabara moldings

The area between the roof and the wall has a thick rounded.
This was all done by hand, so you can see the skill of the craftsman here.
Although it looks simple, this is a very time consuming piece of labor.

3. Wave jyabara moldings

Ornamental waves can be seen in the area between the roof and the wall.
To a family that is storing important things in the warehouse, the most frightening thing is fire.
With the hope that a fire will not occur, the moldings are made in the shape of waves to associate the building with water.

Visit Japanese site below.
http://www.suzakamap.com/book/omoide1.html

If you have chance to come to Suzaka, please walk around Suzaka, and check each Jyabara!

Suzaka's main street

Guest House KURA is located at Suzaka city in Nagano.

Where is SUZAKA?
Famouse for what??

There is little information about SUZAKA,
so I will introduce about SUZAKA through this blog.

Suzaka city is next to Nagano city.
It takes only 17 min from Nagano Sat. to Suzaka by rapid train(Nagano Dentetsu Line).
Good access to Zenkoji temple, Snow Monkey Park, and Obuse.

This is the main street of SUZAKA.

The entrance to this main street was once known as the "front door to Suzaka".

Suzaka City prospered from the Meiji era(1868-1912) to the beginning of the Showa era as
a silk cultivation town.
Here the high quality silk produced in Suzaka was exported from Yokohama Bay
to America and other places around the world.
When Suzaka was at its height of silk production, this area was packed with
warehouses of the silk production families.

They built so many warehouses that it was as if they were trying to show off
their wealth to visitors.

The many warehouses that were built as symbols of their prosperity by families
who have since exhausted their fortunes still remain a legacy for the current
generations.

These warehouses are called "KURA" in Japanese.

If you have chance to come to Nagano, please drop by Suzaka City!
You are always welcomed!!
